The Bride & Groom
Allison Bonjean Kraus | The bride

Allison is a vegetarian, travel addict who plans a vacation much better than a wedding (hence our pre-honeymoon to Ireland). Allison loves animals, Bruce Springsteen, Bloody Marys, anything Disney, and her husband-to-be!

Thanks to Cortney, Allison has a new appreciation for home improvement and has even ventured into gardening; however, her plant survival rate remains low.

Cortney Benjamin Mills | The groom

Cortney is a music-loving, proud Packers shareholder. He is extremely dedicated to his yard, but when not working outside, he enjoys animals, concerts, craft beers, and his wife-to-be!

Cortney has loved traveling the world with Allison and is now on the lookout for National Park stamps and flattened penny opportunities.

The Proposal

In the winter of 2012 Allison, who is always on alert for travel deals, came across a great discount on an escorted trip to China. Cortney, an eager adventurer, was game. The trip was impulsively booked and in March 2013 we headed off to China to meet 40 thrifty Gate One travelers, including Allison’s parents. (They too can't resist a great travel deal.)

The two-week adventure started in Shanghai and continued on to cruise the Yangtze River, visit Xi'an, home of the Terracotta Warriors, and end in Beijing. The last day of the trip began with a 6am wake up and trip to Juyongguan where we hiked the Great Wall of China. After lunch we visited the giant pandas at the Beijing Zoo, saw Mao's portrait in the legendary Tiananmen Square, and enjoyed a Peking duck dinner (well Cortney enjoyed the duck).

After an absolutely amazing, but exhausting day, Allison was ready to get to bed. Cortney however was insistent that we needed a drink at the hotel's top floor bar. After much cajoling, Allison gave in and agreed to go upstairs for one drink.

And so it was that we found ourselves drinking Tsingtao beers in an empty bar on the 27th floor of Beijing's Chang An Grand Hotel. Cortney got down on one knee and pulled out the ring he had brought across the world and carried in his wallet for the past two weeks. Allison was silent in complete shock, and without waiting for an answer Cortney put the ring on Allison's finger. Once she recovered Allison was able to respond and the answer, of course, was yes!
